TPC Fax Server HOWTO:
This page is designed to be a checklist
of steps required to set up a fax server and join the TPC.INT fax
server network. It is assumed that the reader has a basic
understanding of how the TPC.INT project works. If not, please
read the RFCs before you proceed.
Read the Documentation:
- Read the Remote Printing RFC's (if you already have
played with sendmail and DNS, you'll be able to
understand how the whole infrastructure works.
- TPC.INT General principles and policy: RFC 1530
- TPC.INT Administrative policies: RFC 1529
- TPC.INT Technical procedures: RFC 1528
- Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) Others are available at ftp://rs.internic.net/rfc
- Read the appropriate manuals for Sendmail and BIND (We also
recommend the O'Reilly
sendmail (Bat) and DNS&Bind books if you don't
know anything about sendmail and DNS). An O'Reilly book
on Unix admin. is also a good acquisition if you don't
have much Unix experience. Finally we'd suggest reading
the book "The Internet Message" by Marshall
Rose for understanding the Internet Email infrastructure.
- Review the TPC Fax Server FAQ.
If you have a question, chances are someone else has
already asked it. Check the FAQ for answers to the most
common questions.
Prerequisites:
- Internet
connectivity & e-mail domain name. To be a TPC
Fax Server cell, you must have a permenent internet
connection or use UUCP.
- System administration skills:
You should already be able to administer your fax
server's OS. (Usually Unix.)
- Time: usually 1-2 hours per week.
What area are you covering?
- Check to see if we already cover your area. The coverage list will be
helpful here, as will our online directory
assistance. We do welcome multiple cells in any
region, but we also offer exclusive coverage of areas
when requested, so if your region is already covered
please get in touch with us before proceeding.
- Create an exchange file. This file defines the list of
the phone numbers and other information about your cell.
Review our sample exchange
file with information about the format. A list of international dialing codes is also
available
- Contact your local DNS zone
administrator. He/She will be responsible for guiding
you through the stages of the registration/activation
process. One thing they should all require from you is
the exchange file you have created.
Setup a FAX Server Software
The TPC.INT project currently supports unix based fax server
software packages. The following is the one we generally
recommend. Choose your platform, and follow the instructions
there:
- UNIX and Linux: Sam Leffler's Hylafax
software.
- Windows, MacOS: No support for Windows
or MacOS is available at this time. No cells running
Windows or MacOS will be added at this time.
